Letter from John Muskopf
We just returned from serving Esperanza the week of January 31st through February 7. Our group size was less than half of the number we've taken in recent years. Violence in Tijuana was often cited as the reason by people who chose not to join us. The U.S. economic situation, gas, and energy prices were also issues.
I must say that our week at the Posada and in the colonias was as enjoyable or more so than other years. Our group at no time felt threatened. We heard no gunshots or other loud noises while working or sleeping at the Posada. There were a few traffic jams at checkpoints, or when the military had pulled people over to check their vehicles, but such activity merely demonstrated that they were doing their jobs.
Our economy is in trouble, but Mexico's is even more so. The ratio between pesos and dollars used to be fairly stable at 9:1, but this year it was 14.5:1 while we were there. Our dollars went farther when we shopped for groceries or souvenirs, but the Tijuana residents are surely feeling a great pinch.
The people we serve need us now more than ever. If we don't make the trip, who will be there to help them? Who will win the drug war? Not the residents who need a decent home to live in and food on the table.
I encourage all who normally participate in Esperanza activities to continue doing so. I'd go back today if time and money would permit it. The city has come a long way, but much work remains. Let's give them all the support we can.
Feel free to call or write to me if you have any questions about our experience this year.
Sincerely,
John Muskopf
