Letter from Steve Schroer

This was my eleventh year as group leader and I believe it was my best. Our group was intentionally smaller this year because of the violence reported in Tijuana. I say intentionally because I limited the group size so that I could more easily transport our participants safely across the border.

Tijuana is a large city. Like any other large city, even in the United States, one needs to be cautious.

I felt very safe in the two Tijuana colonias where we worked. The people are in great need and unfortunately the economic situation in the U.S. affects them too. All the more reason that we must take cautious risks to help. In the evenings, our group stayed in La Gloria, we visited the local taco stand, we visited and played cards. On Sunday we had a lovely scenic drive to wine country.

Much of the danger we hear in the U.S. relates to the drug wars. It seems to be politically motivated and exacerbated by the media. When going to Tijuana I would suggest using common sense just as if going to any large city in the United States. Remember we are the guests and should respect the Mexican culture. I'd return tomorrow if I had the time off work and the money to do so.

I would be glad to talk with anyone who has concerns. I've included my phone number if you want to ask me any details.
